It was envisioned by Pierre L'Enfant, DC's designer, that a parade along East Capitol Street would lead revelers to the park grounds for post-inauguration festivities. The Nation was smaller then. Today the park, one of eight on Capitol Hill, is a favorite of visitors and residents.
